Oscar C. Salazar

Summer 2023 WZGT Scholarship

Oscar is a descendant of Washoe Tribal Members Ruth Peirce Abbie and Ruth Kay Abbie, and is a sophomore at the University of Nevada, Reno, majoring in Computer Science & Engineering. In his essay, he wrote about how his community and Tribe, and Washoe TANF have provided him with assistance. He has taken his scholarship seriously throughout his educational career, and says that “Family holds tremendous importance in my life, and witnessing their pride in how far I’ve come despite the challenges would mean the world to me.”

He is aware that as a first-generation student of “…the power of education, the significance of community, and the transformative impact of support.” He wants to give back to his community, and says that “By creating innovative solutions and inspiring others to pursue knowledge, I hope to empower more individuals to inspire their dreams.”

Washiw Zulshish Goom Tahn-Nu is proud to have selected Oscar for the Summer 2023 scholarship opportunity, and please watch for the next scholarship opportunity coming in 2024! Congratulations, Oscar!
